Conservative attacks are mounting against Dawn Johnsen, President Obama’s progressive nominee to head the Office of Legal Counsel, who has blasted Bush-era arguments in defense of torture as “outlandish” and “shockingly flawed.”  But Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (Dem.- R.I.) notes that GOP charges of partisanship, given the “long dark days of degradation” of the office, are what Jon Stewart recently, rightfully called “disingenuous at best, and criminal at worst.”

“Now suddenly they come forward with concerns,” he said.  “Where were
you when those incompetent, ideological opinions were being issued?”

Seymour Hersh:  Secret US Forces Carried Out Assassinations in a Dozen Countries

Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh created a stir earlier this month when he said the Bush administration ran an “executive assassination ring” that reported directly to Vice President Dick Cheney.  “Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or to the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving,” Hersh said.
