Reminders. . .

These Realities Still Exist - And We As A Nation Must Confront Them.
by The Old Hippie, Because Otherwise, It Will Be “Allowed” To Get Even Worse.

The Realities: A short list, including reference links, of what most of us know are the most “need of correction” realities our nation must confront.  Since most of these realities are of equal importance, there is no particular ordering to the listing.

Only ~40% of voting age Americans actually voted in the last two national elections.

1 in 32 Americans in U.S. jails, on probation or parole.  More than any other nation in history.

America has the 53rd freest press in the world - 52 other nations have a freer press than us.

US is the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels, according to the C.I.A.'s “World Factbook.”

Torture was “allowed” to become official American policy.

Habeas Corpus - Gone - Even for an American citizen, via the Military Commissions Act.

The E-Voting Situation still must be fixed.

Trillions upon trillions of American taxpayer's dollars - Gone - The largest successful, (and “allowed,”) theft in the history of humankind.

The complete, (and insane,) “allowed” corruption of the sciences, by politicization for corporate profits, and opportunistic theocratic ideology.

We are still illegally occupying Iraq - Bring the troops home now.

46 million Americans don't have health insurance, another 50 million Americans are under-insured, and the cost of healthcare has gone out of the reach of a large number of Americans, and so there's only one real solution, and that is to make healthcare not-for-profit.  I mean healthcare should be established as a basic right in a democratic society.  Every industrialized democracy has healthcare for its people- Except America.

Note:  How many of you ~31%, that still, corruptly or insanely, support this criminally destructive, now well proven lying administration, realize that, (46 million + 50 million,) 96 million Americans, approximately 1/3 of our nation, have no real healthcare protection?  And How many of you 31% are included within that ~1/3 of America?

How Much More?

The Proven Liars Are Still Lying To Us, Still Profiting...
by Old Hippie Because The Allowing Is Still Being Allowed To Continue.

Almost to a person, this administration has been exposed, and proven, beyond anyone's doubt, to be liars, and criminal profiteers of the worse ilk, not to mention also hypocrites beyond any possible bombastic description, and even though not yet convicted, proven also to be war criminals by any sane reality-based person's definition.  But yet, they are still being allowed to continue to hand out no-bid contracts to proven corrupt corporations - To continue to damage environmental sciences, and environmental laws, even further than they have already been in the last six years, where any of the remaining environmental regulations stands in the way of their profits - To continue to attempt even further consolidation of our already consolidated, and corrupted, corporate media - To continue to place persons of proven corporatist bias into positions of management within what used to be “our” federal regulatory agencies - To continue to be allowed to “legally” torture human beings “in our names” within “our” no-so-secret military prisons, without any oversight - - -

Until January of 2007 this nation will continue to be controlled by a one-party-ruled corrupted government “of, by, and for” the profits-over-even-life corporatists.  If this nation continues to allow the corrupters to continue to corrupt our nation, even further than they have already, for these next two months - Then this nation truly deserves what the allowed corruptions reap.

Benjamin Franklin was correct when he emphasized, “Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Possibly - Never Again. . .

Will We Ever Again Have Leaders Caring More For The Common Good, Than “*”?    [ Where “*” = “Party,” or “Career,” or “Money,” or “Ideology,” or. . . ]

Patriot

I keep hoping, but since the 1st and 2nd generations of our Founders, I haven't seen any.  Have you?  Since the corporations became defined as “humans” in the mid-late 1800's, the Common Good has steadily become less and less of a priority for our leaders, whereas the “hidden” paradigm of profits-over-everything has become, (now completely out of control,) the overwhelming priority - Especially since the creation of, the growing influences of, and the corruptions by, the Military-Industrial Complex, (including a growing list of other shared Boards of Directors' corporations.)

I, like many in my generation, (I'm 59,) have watched as our nation has gone from a beacon of hope, to an oppressing Empire of death and destruction for the many, and unprecedented profits for the very-very few.  We have seen the population double in our lifetimes, (and I can remember my parents worrying about over-population when I was a child.)  We've seen our nation become the #1 polluter, and most imprisoned nation, on the planet, (and in all of the planet's written history,) - All within the time span of just one generation.

Yes - We won this last election - It was a pendulum-swing smackdown of out-of-control corporate greed - But - The corporate mind set is the same as the Borg's - They will not stop, not without real punishment, and sane controls.  One can not even begin to wrap their mind around the crisis we face today, without fully understanding that the corporations see the Constitutional safeguards, protecting individual liberties and freedoms, the of balance of power, the separation of church and state, and the original intent of the federal regulatory systems - as “enemies” - to their “right to uncontrolled maximized profits.”

Time For. . .

The Mind-Jerk of a Reality-Based Observation of Our American Reality
Because Sam Raimi, Stephen King, and Dean Koontz, Together, Really Couldn't Scare Me More.

“They” are in office until January 2007.  -  “He” is office until January 2009.

Enough said?

Unless there is a rational, reality-based, commonsense, and sane balance of power based, corrective process of investigation, punishment, and restrengthening of the Constitutional safeguards damaged by “them,” then it is going to continue to be allowed to get worse, long before it is forced to get better.

Considering how important this last election was, only ~40% of eligible American voters bothered to vote.  For whatever insane, irrational, delusional, or apathetical excuses they used, ~60% of eligible Americans voters shamed themselves, and our nation, by exercising their right not to give a flying fuck.  To quote a man I really don't like, nor have any respect for, you all, (except for those that tried, but were cheated out of their votes,) “can go fuck yourselves.”

Only ~40% - That reality almost scares me more than anything else.

[ The following comment is from BushFlash.com, which, (for some unknown reason,) does not have any “permalinks” to its individual postings, therefore, I present his astute, and reality-based comment in its entirety below. ]

OKAY- ENOUGH CELEBRATING- BACK TO WORK...

The beast has been hobbled, and though we rightfully take cheer in this, we must remain wary.  Any animal handler will tell you that a dangerous animal becomes all the more threatening, when they are wounded.  Much like a rottweiler caught in a bear trap, the republican party has gone into full cornered-rat mode, casting about itself in fear, and lashing out in fearful desperation.

In the leadup to the transition to the new congress, the Bush Bowl is faced with their last chance to make their ruinous policies permanent, and we're sure to see the lame-duck session rubberstamping like there's no tomorrow.  There's little than can be done about this last-ditch offensive, other than to grin, bear it, and entertain a bit of confidence that when the adults are sworn in on January 3rd, perhaps some of the damage these children have wrought can be repaired.

So, we must keep an eye on the tremendous task before us, as a country.

Firstly:  The war

Unfortunately, there are things that even a tremendous swing in the congress cannot solve.  The powers of the legislative branch in the realm of foreign affairs are limited, but through their actions, they can force the executive to make changes.  Considering that Bush has proven himself incapable to admitting any mistakes, and even less adept at accepting reality, I'm not too hopeful.

The only solution, in light of this, is for the democratic congress to end our involvement in Iraq.

We invaded Iraq on a penny, and now, we're in for a few billion pounds.  Our current path in Iraq will only lead to further disaster, and the only solution is a phased withdrawal of U.S. forces, letting the UN and NATO take over the security situation (with both forces invested with the funding, weaponry, and powers necessary to control the situation.  Pro-western, secular Muslim nations should be given a prominent role in the peacekeeping forces- Pakistan should be sent packing.)

Further, all no-bid Iraqi contracts to US firms must be rescinded, and investigated.  Those companies found to have been gouging the american taxpayers should be fined to the tune of at least 75% of their gross earnings, with the money from these fines given over to Iraqi small businesses, with the caveat that the funds will be used to employ Iraqi citizens.  (The unemployment rate in Iraq is hovering at around 70%- give a guy a job to feed his family, and he's a hell of a lot less likely to volunteer to be a suicide bomber.)

While this is underway, Iraq must be made open to outside investment- this means that Halliburton, KBR, and the rest of the usual suspects need to leave- NOW.  A full American divestment from Iraq is necessary, and essential- the American speculators need to be brought home, right alongside the troops.

Second:  Rumsfeld

I'd be remiss, were I not to point out the revolting nature of Rumsfeld's departure:  He wasn't removed because he hopelessly bungled the war in Iraq, from day one.  He wasn't removed because of the nearly 3000 Americans and 650,000 Iraqis he killed.  He was only removed, after George Bush found it to be politically expedient.  In light of this, one can only assume that Bush would have kept Rumsfeld on, regardless of the death and destruction he certainly would wreak in the future, had the election gone the other way.

This overt politicization of the disaster that Iraq has become is only to be expected, but it's still chilling.  What's even more chilling is that Rumsfeld, who is responsible for more horror and death than possibly anyone alive today, might very well walk away, and spend the rest of his days in peaceful retirement.

Fortunately, “Old Europe” has risen to the occasion, and charges have been brought against Rumsfeld in the German courts, and criminal prosecution is set to proceed.  The U.S. Government is leaning on the Germans to put a damper on the case, but it's likely that U.S. efforts to interfere in the German judicial process will just piss them off.

Thirdly:  The Neocons

They're down, but not out.  In recent days, faced with the reality that their pet project in Iraq has turned sour, they have been making their disapproval public- but not in the way you might imagine...

They claim that the invasion of Iraq was a damned sterling idea, but are lamenting that those amongst their number who executed their glorious plans screwed the pooch.

This is roughly analogous to an architect who designed a 100-story skyscraper built entirely from toothpicks and stale cat turds blaming the builders for using an inferior grade of feline feces.  Make no mistake- this neocon “revolt” is an exercise in ass-covering, designed to ensure their ideological survival.  They still have designs for a war in Iran, and they have their fingers in a hundred other pies- they're still among us, and we need to remain vigilant...

Fourthly:  Impeachment

Much hay has been made about the assertions by Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean that impeachment isn't on the table.  Ladies and Gentlemen- this is nothing but politics.

Howard Dean, as chair of the democratic party, is more of a CEO, than a politician.  He isn't in charge of the party's agenda- he's just someone who decides how the party is managed.  As such, he is not in a position to define the party's programme.  Similarly, Nancy Pelosi is making her anti-impeachment statements from her position as leader of the democratic majority in the House- not as a representative.

Putting it plainly:  When Dean and Pelosi say that impeachment isn't on the agenda, they're saying so in their capacities as administrators of party apparati, not as legislators.  Nancy Pelosi, as leader of the House democrats, might not advance articles of impeachment against Bush, but that doesn't stop John Conyers from doing so.

If impeachment is to succeed, it cannot be seen as an issue closely tied with any one political party- it must be framed not as a partisan issue, but as an issue that transcends party lines, (which is the primary reason why the republican-led impeachment of Clinton failed- it was so nakedly partisan, it was doomed from the start.)

Impeachment proceedings against Bush will begin- and when they do, we're going to have to handle this with finesse, rather than the ham-handedness that marked the GOP proceedings against Clinton.

Number 5:  Oversight

In the five days following the election, I've watched Fox “News” quite a bit- The spin has been simultaneously dizzying and downright hilarious.  I haven't heard schizophrenia on this level since I listened into short wave broadcasts of Radio Moscow, in the days following the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

Whenever a democratic politician is interviewed, the Fox talking head invariably leans into the camera, and in level tones tinged with barely-concealed fear, asks the question:

“Will the democratic congress waste the american people's time with endless hearings, second-guessing this administration?”

Once again, the republicans display their ignorance of how our government works.  “Second-guessing” the executive branch is the MOST IMPORTANT role that the legislative branch plays.  In the next two years, expect to hear endless protestations from the republican party, as they're called to account for their actions...

And #6:  KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

In the days following the election, I have spoken with a lot of my liberal friends, and all of them have been very upbeat.  I, on the other hand, have been morose and depressed- “Hey- we won!” they say- “We'll see”, I reply...

And that's a damned shame...

After four years of seeing every last hope being crushed like a newborn kitten beneath tank treads, I've become more pessimistic than I have ever been, in my life- but then, I got to thinking...

Hope is the lifeblood of human progress.  Hope is the unique human emotion that allows us to fight for a better day, no matter the forces arrayed against us.  Hope is the ephemeral, yet vital thread that united Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, and Martin Luther King, during their darkest hours in their march towards justice.  Hope is the force that sustains Aung San Syoo Ki, Cindy Sheehan, and Rev. Ndabaningi Sithole, and millions upon millions of others who are fighting for peace and justice in this world.

I realized that I had let these evil bastards rob me of this essential necessity of life- But no more.

The arc of history is long, but it always has, and always shall, bend towards justice.

The revolution's started- it's up to us to make sure it succeeds.

[ And, dear readers, I simply could not agree more. ]

Time To "Get Real" -

“Victory” Is What Defines The Beginning Of The Real Work To Be Done
by The Old Hippie, Because Otherwise, The Victory Would Be In Vain, And Wasted.

Liberty:
a. The condition of being free from restriction or control.
b. The right and power to act, believe, or express oneself in a manner of one's own choosing.
c. The condition of being physically and legally free from confinement, servitude, or forced labor.

Freedom:
a. The condition of being free of restraints.
b. Liberty of the person from slavery, detention, or oppression.

But these two word's reality, as defined by our Constitutional Democracy's Bill of Rights, made George Bush's administration's job too difficult - So they set out to destroy the Bill of Rights, to re-define the very reality of the American reality - And to a point, they succeeded -

It Is These “Successes” That Defines What Must Be Corrected. . .

Habeas Corpus - Gone - Even for an American citizen, via the Military Commissions Act.  [POV link]

All of the Bill of Rights, (except the 3rd Amendment, the forced quartering of the military within our homes,) purposely legislated away.

Trillions upon trillions of American taxpayer monies - Gone - The largest successful, (and allowed,) theft in the history of humankind.

There are more Americans imprisoned within corporate prisons, in raw numbers, and in percentage of the population, than in any other nation on the planet, now, and at any time in the written history of humankind.

The unforgivable allowing, and acceptance, of the torture, and killing, of innocent human beings, (the Pentagon openly admits, on the public record, that the large majority of the “prisoners,” upwards of 80%, were/are innocent of any crimes,) within our military prisons.

All of us know the torture was not the acts of a few “bad apples,” but rather a successful corruption of official policy from the top down.

Tax cuts for the wealthy, during “war time,” successfully enacted, (and allowed.)

Massive Corporate tax cuts, during a period of unprecedented criminal profiteering, and record corporate profits - Allowed - Even as the number of Americans in poverty rose for the 4th year in a row.

The “Iraq War” or the “War on Terrorism,” as the Attorney General points out, is not a declared war... “It was an authorization only to use military force,” by the Executive.  [Explanation link]

A very real total corruption of our nation's electoral process in 2000, 2002, and 2004, by criminally biased corporatists e-voting machines, that even after this past 2006 mid-term “mandate” election have not been fixed.

The almost destruction of the Balance of Powers.

The almost complete elimination of the Separation of Church and State.

The complete, (and insane,) corruption, by politicization for corporate profits, and opportunistic ideology, of all the sciences.

The ongoing consolidation of the control of the nation's media into the hands of six corporations, to the point that our nation's “free-press” has just been ranked the 53rd freest in the world - 53rd!
52 other nations, right now, have a freer press than we do.

PBS’s NOW: The Election Outcomes
  [ - via Crooks and Liars - ]
By: Nicole Belle @ 4:45 PM - PST

NOW :

News headlines are heralding Democratic Congressional victories on Election Night, but the larger story of the 2006 mid-term elections transcends statistical winners and losers.  Since late summer, NOW has been focusing on crucial but underreported personal and political questions related to the election, such as: the performance of malfunctioning voting machines, the outcomes of deceptive ballot initiatives, the influence of religion in politics, the impact of immigration and minimum wage issues, the political role of the blogosphere, and the success rate of “clean” campaigners.  Tonight, [Nov. 10, 2006] NOW takes a hard look at the outcomes of these issues, as well as the individual people profoundly affected by them.

Also, NOW's David Brancaccio and Salon.com editor-in-chief Joan Walsh place a magnifying glass on mid-term election outcomes to reveal what it means for America's future.

The NOW website tracked these outcomes, as well as others not included in the broadcast, and link to their original NOW investigations.

Last Night Nancy Pelosi Said. . .

Democrats Not Out For Revenge - Good - But Punishment Isn't Revenge.
by The Old Hippie, Because to “Allow” them to go unpunished would be insanely bad governing.

Read

I believe Pelosi's offer of no revenge is good commonsense governing - But if that also means to not punish, to not try to return the trillions of dollars openly stolen from our treasury by obvious corporatists war-profiteering criminals, and to not clean “our” federal regulatory agencies of their openly destructive profiteering corporatist criminals, and their ideological sycophants, from control of “our” domestic, social, foriegn, environmental, and scientific governmental agencies - To not do these actions, would be an act of insanity, especially after the “stated loud mandate” that this mid-term election rout is shouting into the faces of those we just elected - And the next election is just two years away.

A nation's willingness to punish politicians, et al, proven to be criminal, in open transparent public trials in non-partisan independent courts - Is a sign of a strong free constitutional democracy, and a proof of the strength of a government of laws, not of men - And not a myth.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = =  <  B e l o w  T h e  F o l d  >  = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

If you agree - Tell Ms. Pelosi, and your representatives in the House and Senate, and your local leaders - Because, if you don't - You know from proven experience, they won't.

Take a breath, do a jig of victory - “We” woke them up, and they woke them up - The American people are fired up right now - We must push the politicians more so now to do the right thing.  Correct what can be corrected, mitigate what can't be, and sanely stop the war - But do not forget to urge, and/or demand commonsense sane constructive punishment of those that criminally caused so much death, and destruction - for the “glory” of unfettered profits.  Trillions of dollars brazenly/sneeringly stolen from the American people, and fed directly, by the billions upon billions, into the pockets of “their few,” through what has already been proven to be blatantly illegal no-bid contracts, and to us in the reality-based citizenry a proven detriment of this nation, it's peoples' health, wealth, environment, jobs, national security, and hope.  As much of those monies as is possible must be returned to the Federal Treasury, as soon as legally possible.

If that money is not returned to our Federal Treasury. . .  They will have won anyway, even if impeached, even if imprisoned - They will have won - Anyway - and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.  Right? - - - Right?!?

It Was All Worth It. . .

A Loud, Undeniable, and Non-Violent, “Revolt” by the American People
by The Old Hippie, Because I really Thought It Couldn't Happen Within Our Damaged Democracy.

Patriot

I admit that I had almost lost my optimism, and I know “it ain't over yet,” as they still, for now, control the Executive, and most of the Judicial branches, plus they still have corporatist control over 95% of the media.  But this “mandate of the people” is a wonderful, and undeniable, breath of sanity, that renews my optimism.  That renews my hope.  That renews the possibility of the re-establishment of a sane balance of power within our government.  And, hopefully, begins to renew the faith the world once had in our nation as a beacon of hope. . .

There is much that needs to be corrected, and punished - But for a moment - I think I will just smile - smile - smile. . .  and maybe even do a little dance of renewed optimistic hope - But only for a moment - As there are still many innocents being killed “in our name,” right now at this moment, for nothing more than profits to the war-profiteers of this openly unapologetic corporatist “profits over even life” administration.  There is still criminally unnecessary environmental damage being wrought for nothing more than profits to the officers of polluting corporations, damage that in some cases that can no longer be undone.  The number of Americans in poverty has risen for the 4th year in a row, and they don't have a lot of breathing room to celebrate this electoral “win.”  There are an unacceptable number of Americans within the grips of health crisis, that are without any health insurance, or health insurance that's so expensive with co-pays, etc., most can not afford to use it.

Be A Little Paranoid. . .

On Election Day, Take Your Video, Web, Spy, Digital Cameras. . .
by The Old Hippie, Because This Election Just May Be Our Last chance To Do The Right Thing.

As has been reported already, in Florida by the Miami Herald, and in an increasing number of other states, the e-voting machines have been proven to be switching Democratic votes into Republican votes on a regular basis.  There's not been one reported case of the switches going the other way, they are all taking votes from democrats, and giving them to republicans.

Record Your Vote - Put it on the web - Give your evidence to people who can do something with it.  Do not “allow” to them steal a 4th national election without a fight.  With all that we Americans have already “allowed” them to get away with over the last six years, we already deserve what's coming, but at least we can finally - maybe - begin to mitigate the damage done, and begin to correct so much, not to mention to - maybe - begin the process of actually punishing those responsible.

Here is a good place to start:  Protect the Election

Here is another good place: [by BushFlash.com]  “TAKE YOUR VIDCAM WITH YOU. If you witness irregularities, unusually long lines to vote, or suspect activity- record it, upload it, and let the world see it, here.”
